Pressurized Media Filter

Pressurized media filters provide effective solids removal and are a key water treatment component in systems that are not head-limited.  Depending on the treatment requirements, media filters can provide physical barriers for particle retention and removal, as well as chemical barriers for dissolved substances such as chlorine or iron.

PR Aqua packages industrial- and institutional-grade, pressurized media filter systems tailored to the specific functionality, flow, and water quality requirements of each facility. PR Aqua can custom design a system around your needs or can provide a system to meet your specifications – either way, PR Aqua has the solutions for your water quality problems.

How It Works

Water from a pressurized source is distributed through screened laterals above the media bed within a pressurized vessel. Water passes down through the interstices around the media. Solids are retained in the media bed by physical entrapment or electro-static attachment; depending on the media used, adsorption and absorption may also be occurring. Filtered water is collected in screened laterals at the bottom of the media bed. Periodic back-flushing, where inlet water enters through the bottom laterals and exits through the top, causes the bed to fluidize and the solids to be released. Back-flush effluent is directed to waste, and normal flow is resumed (with or without a rinse cycle).

  • Dominant filtration technology with proven performance
  • Simple, reliable operation
  • Multiple-vessel systems can be configured for un-interrupted flow through back-wash operations
  • Multi-media option allows for series of treatments in single unit
  • Predictable back-wash water and energy consumption
  • Ideal for small systems and sub-systems where pumping costs are reduced, or for influent treatment when influent water has sufficient hydraulic head
  • Range of materials, liners, and finishes available
  • Multiple-tank configurations provide redundancy and operational flexibility
  • Plumbing can be configured for multiple filtrations units to operate in parallel, series, or – for maximum flexibility - both
  • System designs can address various risk management requirements
  • Fully automated option can be controlled by remote, by pressure differential, or by timer
  • Post-commissioning media substitutions for enhanced performance can be made at minimal cost
