A significant percentage of the wastes generated in a Recirculating Aquaculture System are too fine to be removed by conventional filtration systems. In tight recirculating systems, they can build up, providing food for bacteria which consume oxygen and release toxins into the water. Foam Fractionators are used to remove these fine organics.
How It Works
Foam Fractionation or Protein Skimming is the removal of suspended and dissolved waste from aquaculture systems by means of air floatation. Dissolved or suspended organic particles are drawn by polar charges in the particle to an air/water interface. One end is drawn to the water while the other end is drawn to the air. Foam Fractionators use this property to remove these particles by injecting tiny bubbles into the culture water. The particles attach themselves to the surface of the bubbles which then rise to the water surface and form a foam layer. Skimming off the foam layer also removes the attached solids. The tiny bubbles maximize the surface area of the air/water interface and the length of time that it takes for the bubbles to rise to the water surface.
Reduces system cleaning requirements by reducing the growth of bacteria on tank and pipe walls, drum filter screens, etc
Reduces oxygen demand by reducing heterotrophic bacteria concentrations
Reduces loading on biofilter by minimizing heterotrophic bacteria
Improves water clarity
Improves transmissivity of UV wavelengths reducing power requirements
A Venturi injector can be used as a low maintenance method to generate the bubbles
Ozone resistant materials can be incorporated so ozone can be used to improve effectiveness in fresh water applications while simultaneously disinfecting the culture water
Foam skimming cones shaped for fresh or for salt water applications are available
Vessels are available in a variety of materials including: HDPE, FRP, PVC (including clear PVC)
